An iconic beach of Crete, a magical place, one of the most beautiful shores and areas of Greece and Europe. This is Elafonissi, located 76 km southwest of Chania and 5 km south of the Monastery of Chrysoskalitissa, at the southwestern tip of Crete. The beach is organized and shallow, making it ideal for both children and adults who enjoy playing with the sand and water. The millions of broken shells create a pinkish hue on the sand. You can walk around until you find the cove that suits you. The island is easy to explore on foot.
At the northernmost tip, between the steep cliffs that act as a natural barrier against the waves, lies the small chapel of Agia Irini, offering an unrestricted view of the sea. Interestingly, Elafonissi is identified with the mythical Mousagores Islands of ancient Greece, and it was once used as a pirate stronghold. The name “Elafonissi” is believed to have come from the pirates who used the island to hide their spoils.
Before reaching this earthly paradise, we will make a stop for a guided tour and tasting at a traditional local honey production facility. The drive will impress you as we cross the lush Topolia Gorge, along with small picturesque villages of the region. Upon arrival at the beach, you will have 4 hours of free time to explore the beach with its pink and white sand, and enjoy a swim in the crystal-clear waters. On our return journey from Elafonissi, we will make our final stop at the village of Elos. The running waters from the local springs and the shade of the tall trees cool visitors even during the hottest summer months. In the traditional cafes at the square of Elos, you can relax in the shade of the plane trees. The old waterworks facilities behind the square and the small church of St. John are the village’s main attractions, reminding visitors of its very old history. In the local tavernas in Elos, you will find authentic Cretan cuisine.
